$IGNAL$ 003: THE ART IS LEAVING THE SCREEN.

New York has no shortage of screens. The stronger work this week is spilling off them.
LIGHT YOU CAN ENTER
Anthony McCall’s solid-light works do not ask you to watch a projected image. They turn projection into a volume you can walk through.
His new work, Swarm, pairs two slowly rotating cones of light with a soundtrack shaped by the growing presence of drones.
The technology is almost beside the point. What matters is that light changes from image to situation.

100 BILLBOARDS ARE ONLY THE BEGINNING
LIZN’BOW has taken over more than 100 Times Square screens with El Mundo es Niña. But the billboards are only one entrance into the project.
The artists have also installed a 34-foot rainbow arch, a 27-foot unicorn-cow riding a jet ski, and a live bilingual reggaeton performance.
The invented world has a body, a soundtrack, jokes, weather and somewhere for people to gather.

THE MUSEUM STAYS ALIVE AFTER THE EXHIBITION
The New Museum reopens September 24 with new exhibitions, public commissions across its plaza, façade and atrium, plus Oberon, a restaurant and bar inside the expanded building.
The museum is treating its architecture as more than an envelope for galleries. Art, food, nightlife and public space are part of the same visit.
The common thread is not visual. Each project uses space to change what people do together.
Before filling a room with content, ask what the room should make possible.
