Three New York projects this week show what happens when a location has a purpose beyond hosting an image or an event.

A SCREEN ENTERS PENN STATION

The Digital Signage Federation opens its four-day New York program with a look at a new digital installation in Penn Station. The team behind it is scheduled to discuss its design, technology, and implementation. Later today, Videri, CollectiveX, and Publicis Media Exchange will examine how connected screens change what venues can measure.

A transit hub gives that conversation some useful friction. People are moving through it to catch trains, not to admire an ad. The work has to belong to the station’s pace and architecture.

THE BEAUTY COUNTER SPILLS INTO THE CAFÉ

Printemps New York’s Beauty Rendez-Vous runs through October 21. In one collaboration, Manucurist’s nail shades become specialty drinks at Café Jalu. Visitors can receive a matching polish with a drink purchase, while selected dates add complimentary manicures.

The product is still for sale, but there is more than one way to encounter it. Color moves from a bottle to a menu, a hand, and a conversation.

BROOKLYN SHOWS THE MAKING

At the Brooklyn Navy Yard’s first XR Brooklyn event, artists showed work alongside the companies and technical teams that help produce it. Jason Isolini’s The Ballad of a Laborer, made within Google Street View, appeared in physical form on a panoramic display built with Planar and Pufferfish Displays.

The Yard also reported that Plug and Play’s next AI Nexus cohort, planned for March 2027, will focus on media and entertainment startups. It is a reminder that a striking installation depends on equipment, collaborators, skills, and somewhere to work.

THE SIGNAL

Penn Station, Printemps, and the Navy Yard are doing different jobs. One must work within the flow of a public building. One invites shoppers to try a product in several forms. One gives makers the means to build.

The most interesting part of each project is specific to its site. That is worth protecting when an experience is designed, documented, or repeated elsewhere.
