$IGNAL$ 009: NEW YORK OPENS UP.

Three New York institutions are using access as the event. One opens hidden infrastructure. One turns vacant windows into a gallery. One is reopening its public rooms before the museum itself.
THE CITY REVEALS ITS BACK ROOMS
Open House New York will unlock more than 300 locations across the five boroughs from October 16 through 18.
Visitors can enter subway construction sites, power facilities, theaters, studios and private collections that normally remain closed. More than half of the locations require no ticket.
The attraction is not something placed inside the city. It is access to the city itself.

THE SCHOOL MOVES TO THE STREET
Pratt Institute placed work by 36 students from six schools inside vacant storefront windows on 14th Street.
The installation made emerging creative work part of the daily pedestrian route. People did not have to plan a museum visit or enter a campus. The work met them on the sidewalk.

THE MUSEUM OPENS IN PIECES
Neue Galerie’s galleries remain closed until November 12, but Café Sabarsky, the bookstore and design shop reopen today.
The museum does not need every room operating before people can reenter its world. Food, books and objects can carry the institution’s point of view before the exhibitions return.
THE SIGNAL
Access is becoming a cultural format.
The point is not simply opening a door. It is giving people a specific way into the work: a tunnel, a window, a café or a shop.
For brands and institutions, the opportunity is not another attraction. It is better access to places people already want to understand.
