$IGNAL$ 013: THE WORKROOM IS OPEN.

Finished work is no longer the only thing worth showing.
Across advertising, commerce, architecture and art, the decisions, tools and spaces behind the outcome are becoming part of the public experience.
THE BRIEF BECOMES A LIVE EVENT
Huge designed MAKE.EXE as an AI creative competition staged like an esports match.
Four teams pairing Huge creative leaders with SVA and Parsons students received mystery client briefs and worked through three timed rounds. The audience could watch them decide what to make, what to remove and what deserved to survive.
The format makes creative judgment visible. AI provides speed, but the event depends on whether the people using it can make convincing choices under pressure.

THE ENTIRE STORE SITS ON ONE CANVAS
Shopify’s new Canvas workspace lays every page of an online store across one visual surface.
Merchants can move from the full system into an individual detail while Sidekick generates and revises working storefront code. Shopify says a custom store that once required weeks can now take minutes.
Faster production does not settle what a brand should look or feel like. It makes that judgment more exposed.

THE ARCHIVE GETS NEW AUTHORS
Van Alen Institute is opening a large portion of its 130-year architectural archive to the public.
Five artists and design teams were invited to make original work from the collection. Their responses ask who American design has served, whose experiences were recorded and what the archive leaves out.
The exhibition treats history as material that can be questioned, not simply displayed.
THE STUDIO DOORS OPEN
Gowanus Open Studios returns for its 30th year with more than 400 artists across over 90 locations.
Visitors can enter private studios, speak directly with artists and see work inside the former factories and warehouses where it was made. Twenty-two newly occupied affordable studios secured through the neighborhood’s rezoning agreement will also open to the public for the first time.
The finished art is only part of the story. The weekend also reveals the physical and economic conditions required to keep artists working in Brooklyn.

THE SIGNAL
Showing process can turn a tool, archive or workspace into an experience, but access alone is not enough.
People need to see real choices being made. The edit, disagreement, constraint and consequence are what make the workroom worth entering.
